Who Should NOT Apply

Some people may not be allowed to get a firearm license in New York City.

You should not apply if you:

  • Have serious criminal convictions
  • Have domestic violence charges or convictions
  • Have an active order of protection against you
  • Have been committed to a mental health facility by a court
  • Are addicted to drugs or alcohol 
  • Have been dishonorable discharged from the United States military
  • You are not a US Citizen, Permanent resident may apply
  • Are not allowed to own a firearm under federal or state law

Who Can Apply

Many people can apply for a New York City firearm license.

You may apply if you:

  • Are 21 years old or older
  • Live in New York City or outside New York State
  • Are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Have no serious criminal convictions
  • Can pass a background check
